Chapter 3
Good and Bad Procrastination
Question 1
Graham gave the advice that you should ask yourself “What’s the best thing you can be working on and why aren’t you doing.” and that you have to procrastinate on the little things and put all of your focus on the big task and I totally agree with him for multiple reasons. First I always find myself laying in my bed on a weeknight and thinking to myself that I could be getting so much work done but for whatever reason I’m just laying in bed and I guarantee that this happens to millions of people each day. I also agree with him that you have to throw aside and procrastinate on the little things in order to make sure the big tasks are done. Whenever I have to do a paper and or study, I always find a million things that I need to get done before I get to the paper finished. Again, this is something we all do, we have to be able to ignore these ‘errands’ and just focus all of your attention at the task and at hand, something that is extremely difficult and requires a lot of skill.

making connections 2

Public speaking has always been a fear of mine and many others are in the same situation I was in. I always scared to go up and speak in front of people because of my speech impediment. From when I was born to about the age of two, I had no hearing. When I finally gained the ability to hear, the muscles in mouth developed incorrectly from not talking and I was left with a speech impediment. Unfortunately there are many people like me that have this same fear of public speaking and this is becoming all too common. What I have learned though that if you let this fear eat at you, it is going to affect other aspects of your life like talking to new people. I’ve learned that colleges like mine offer classes to help me get over my fear and that’s something that most people need to do because it really can affect your life. My greatest advice for someone that is in the same situation I was in, is to go out and join a class to help you get over your fear.

Mostly everyone feels overscheduled at one point or another, especially people in my generation, including myself. Its weird with me though, I find myself more overscheduled in high school then I do in college but I still do feel overscheduled. In high school for example every part of my day I had something going on. I would wake up in the morning, shower then going straight to school, after I would go home do my homework and study then head straight to the hockey rink for a 9 o’clock game or practice. I would feel so over overscheduled all the time until I finally realized that I had to dial it back a little and make time so I wasn’t so overwhelmed by the amount of work I had to do. I was getting grades so I decided to spend a little less time studying and a little more time relaxing. I was able to still get good grades but also felt a lot less overwhelmed. In college I have a lot of work but I also have a lot of time so it evens out. People who feel overscheduled have to decided if they have something in the schedule that they are willing to take out because it can make someone fell so much better.

Choice 2
I personally feel that Albert Cruz reasons to forgo college are legitimate and well thought-out. I feel it is all about the position you’re in when you come out of high school. If you come out of high school with a job that offers opportunities to move up the rankings and a make a lot of money then you should totally go for it. If you don’t have that kind of job waiting for you then you should definitely give a college a chance because it offers a lot of opportunities. Another reason why I agree with his reasoning is because the same thing happened to my dad.  My dad decided to become a cop straight out of high school but tried to go to college at the same time. The workload was too much for him and he was forced drop out of college. Being a police officer offered many opportunities that he just couldn’t turn down. It ended up the right choice because he was able to move up the ranking and becoming one of the highest-ranking police officers in New York City. So If I were Albert Cruz friend I would tell to take the one that will give him the ability to have a bright future.

Chapter 2

Writing topic 5
Sex education is very controversial and something that has been debated on for many years. As a college freshman, just coming out of high school, I believe that sex education should be taught in both public and even private high schools. One of the reasons sex education is so controversial is that parents refuse to accept that young adults do indeed have sex. Parents however have to understand these facts, by the age of fifteen around 15% of teens have sex, then number then doubles to around 33% at sixteen, then goes up to 48 % at age seventeen and then finally at age eighteen, 61% of teens have sex. More then half of teenagers have sex before going to college. Now the question is when to start teaching teenagers about sex education. I personally feel that around 9th grade, students should have a sex education class. In the first year of high school students began to notice that sex actually does happen and is not this made up magical thing. I also feel that students should take another sex education class in 11th grade because around this time a lot of students began to have sex. I feel that the 11th grade class to go more in depth and talk about the risk. Sex is bound to happen with teenagers, they just have to know how to be safe about it.

Question 4

I personally feel that all students are fully responsible for the amount of drinking that goes on in or around their college campus.  While most of the time it happens on the grounds of the college, it’s not the school supplying the alcohol to the students and the school shouldn’t get blamed. These students in order to get alcohol have to go out and buy it themselves. All of these students know the risks of drinking but still go a head with buying and consuming the alcohol. Every college, no matter where you go, will have alcohol and under age drinking going on. Colleges can have the strictest rules about drinking but no matter what drinking will still happen. These rules might even make the students want to drink more. In my own personal opinion the only way to fully stop drinking at colleges is to totally ban alcohol but that is completely unrealistic. The only responsibility that colleges should have is educating the students about drinking after that the responsibility is fully in the student’s hands. All college students are young adults and most of them think they’re invincible; they have to learn the true power of alcohol themselves and hopefully be mature enough to know when to stop.
