Public speaking has always been a fear of mine and many
others are in the same situation I was in. I always scared to go up and speak
in front of people because of my speech impediment. From when I was born to
about the age of two, I had no hearing. When I finally gained the ability to hear,
the muscles in mouth developed incorrectly from not talking and I was left with
a speech impediment. Unfortunately there are many people like me that have this
same fear of public speaking and this is becoming all too common. What I have learned
though that if you let this fear eat at you, it is going to affect other
aspects of your life like talking to new people. I’ve learned that colleges
like mine offer classes to help me get over my fear and that’s something that
most people need to do because it really can affect your life. My greatest advice
for someone that is in the same situation I was in, is to go out and join a
class to help you get over your fear.
Public speaking is also something I hate and makes me uncomfortable, even if it’s in front of people I know and feel comfortable in front of I still hate having so much attention on me. In high school I was in a class with almost the exact same people every year and every time I had to present in front of them I dreaded it and sometimes I would just start laughing right on the spot which wasn’t the smartest thing to do. I’m actually glad I’m taking up a theater class next semester which will cover my requirement for public speaking. I used to love to act when I was younger, I don’t understand why I’m more comfortable acting than I am public speaking since there’s not much of a difference, but I am happy there’s an alternative for me and other people that don’t want to spend a semester writing speeches and presenting them.
