Chapter 2
Topic 4
Writing topic 5
Sex education is very controversial and something that has been debated on for many years. As a college freshman, just coming out of high school, I believe that sex education should be taught in both public and even private high schools. One of the reasons sex education is so controversial is that parents refuse to accept that young adults do indeed have sex. Parents however have to understand these facts, by the age of fifteen around 15% of teens have sex, then number then doubles to around 33% at sixteen, then goes up to 48 % at age seventeen and then finally at age eighteen, 61% of teens have sex. More then half of teenagers have sex before going to college. Now the question is when to start teaching teenagers about sex education. I personally feel that around 9th grade, students should have a sex education class. In the first year of high school students began to notice that sex actually does happen and is not this made up magical thing. I also feel that students should take another sex education class in 11th grade because around this time a lot of students began to have sex. I feel that the 11th grade class to go more in depth and talk about the risk. Sex is bound to happen with teenagers, they just have to know how to be safe about it.

  1. You are right to say that parents should understand that most teenagers are having sex whether they like it or not. Parents can not stop their children from having sex but they could help prevent their children from becoming a young parent, or catching stds. I was not aware of the statistics you set above, so now knowing this I feel freshman year is the perfect year for schools to start offering sex education classes to their pupils. When you are in high school you tend to grow up faster than intended because you feel that your are older and more independent and want to do things that older people do. Even if teenagers feel that they are not ready to have sex yet they should still without a doubt be interested in learning these kind of things because anything can happen whether you plan it or not and these lessons are valuable.
